Reason to Exercise

Reasons to exercise (or exercise determinants) point to the motives that lead a person to take up and adopt exercise as part of their lifestyle. Around us we see very different attitudes to exercise — some people have never started and do not plan to, some intend to start but never manage it, and others begin but drop out before long. The main reasons people find to exercise, keep fit and take part in recreational sport are:

  1. Overcoming Social Physique Anxiety. People are influenced by how others judge their looks, fitness, body shape, weight and size. This drives many to adopt methods to become leaner and fitter. Exercise combined with a proper diet helps them reach this goal and eases social physique anxiety.
  2. Reduced Risk of Disease. Modern, urbanised, sedentary living has raised health problems such as hypertension and obesity. Adopting regular exercise and fitness activity is an essential way to counter a sedentary lifestyle and lower disease risk.
  3. Recreation. With more hours spent at desks and in serious study or work, people struggle to find time for fun and enjoyment. Recreational sport, fitness and exercise provide enjoyment and recreation alongside physical benefits, making recreation an important reason to exercise.
  4. Mental Relaxation. People of every age and background look for ways to reduce stress. Exercise is one of the most effective and economical ways to cope with stress and depression, so mental relaxation is a genuine reason to take part. …
