In-situ conservation protects species in their natural habitats, conserving whole ecosystems. It is carried out through legally protected areas.
- National Parks — strictly protected areas reserved for wildlife where no human activity (grazing, cultivation, forestry) is allowed. Jim Corbett National Park (Uttarakhand, 1936) was the first national park in India.
- Wildlife Sanctuaries — protect particular species but permit some regulated human activity.
- Biosphere Reserves — large multi-use areas conserving biodiversity along with traditional human life.
