In-situ conservation means conserving species in their natural habitat itself, mainly through protected areas such as national parks, wildlife sanctuaries and biosphere reserves.

In-situ ('on site') conservation is the process of protecting endangered plant/animal species in their natural habitat, either by protecting or cleaning up the habitat itself or by defending the species from predators. This is achieved by legally protecting large representative areas of biodiversity-rich regions as protected areas: biosphere reserves, national parks, wildlife sanctuaries and sacred groves. All the plants and animals in such a protected area, including the associated micro-organisms, are conserved together, along with the ecosystem processes that support them. Biodiversity 'hotspots' - regions with very high species richness and endemism that are also under high threat - receive special priority for such protection.
