Species richness rises with area (up to a limit) - a rectangular hyperbola that becomes a straight line on a log-log scale: log S = log C + Z log A.

Alexander von Humboldt observed that within a given region species richness increases with the area explored, but only up to a certain limit. When plotted on ordinary (arithmetic) axes the species-area relationship is a rectangular hyperbola.

On a logarithmic scale the relationship becomes a straight line, described by:

log⁡S=log⁡C+Zlog⁡A\log S = \log C + Z \log A

i.e. S=C AZS = C\,A^{Z}

where S = species richness, A = area, Z = slope of the line (regression coefficient) and C = Y-intercept.
