A sparged stirred-tank bioreactor scales up microbial/cell culture from a small volume to a large volume with continuous agitation and aeration, converting raw materials into a desired product with the help of microbial, plant, animal or human cell enzyme systems.

A bioreactor is a vessel in which raw materials are biologically converted into specific products using microbial, plant, animal or human cells (or their enzymes). The most commonly used type is the sparged stirred-tank bioreactor.

Labelled structure (described, as text cannot show a hand-drawn figure):

  • Outer vessel (tank): a large cylindrical container that holds the culture medium and growing cells/microorganisms.
  • Agitator/stirrer: a motor-driven shaft with impeller blades (foam breaker) at the top, which stirs the contents to keep the cells in suspension and evenly distributed.
  • Sparger (air inlet at the base): introduces sterile air/oxygen as fine bubbles from the bottom of the vessel to provide the oxygen needed for aerobic growth of cells (hence 'sparged'). …
