A meiocyte is the specialised diploid cell that enters meiosis; before meiosis it still has the full diploid set, which in humans is 46.

A meiocyte (gamete mother cell, e.g. a primary spermatocyte or primary oocyte) is a diploid (2n) cell. It undergoes meiosis to form haploid gametes. Before meiosis begins it therefore contains the same chromosome number as any body cell of that organism.
