Blue-green algae/cyanobacteria such as Nostoc, Anabaena, Oscillatoria and Aulosira are photosynthetic, nitrogen-fixing prokaryotes commonly found in soil and paddy fields. Many of them possess specialised, thick-walled cells called heterocysts, which provide the anaerobic environment needed for the oxygen-sensitive enzyme nitrogenase to fix atmospheric nitrogen (N2) into ammonia (NH3), a form usable by plants. This biologically fixed nitrogen enriches soil fertility without any chemical fertilizer input. In addition, when these algae die, their biomass adds organic matter to the soil and improves its water-holding capacity and aeration.
