A biopesticide is a substance derived from living organisms (bacteria, fungi, viruses, or biochemicals from plants) used to manage pests, offering a safer alternative to chemical pesticides since it is generally target-specific and biodegradable.

Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) as a biopesticide: this soil bacterium produces crystal (Cry) protein toxins during sporulation. When formulated as a spray/dust and applied to crops, the spores/toxin crystals are ingested by feeding insect larvae (e.g. caterpillars of Lepidoptera).
