Figure — A diagram of crossing over

Crossing over is a meiotic event that shuffles alleles between homologous chromosomes, the physical basis of genetic recombination.

Definition: Crossing over is the mutual exchange of segments (genetic material) between non-sister chromatids of a pair of homologous chromosomes during meiosis, resulting in chromatids with new combinations of alleles not present in either parental chromosome.

Mechanism (as would be shown in a diagram):

  1. During zygotene of meiotic prophase I, homologous chromosomes pair up closely (synapsis), each pair forming a bivalent/tetrad (of four chromatids — two sister chromatids per homolog).
  2. During pachytene, a protein structure called the synaptonemal complex holds the paired chromosomes together, and non-sister chromatids exchange segments at points of contact.
  3. These points of exchange become visible as X-shaped structures called chiasmata during diplotene, where the connected, crossed-over chromatids can be seen still joined at the point of exchange. …
