Criss-cross inheritance is the diagonal transmission of an X-linked gene (father to daughter to grandson); an X-linked recessive trait such as haemophilia is passed from a carrier mother to half of her sons.

Criss-cross inheritance: Genes located on the X (sex) chromosome are said to be sex-linked. Because a father passes his single X chromosome only to his daughters (never to his sons, who get his Y), and a mother passes an X to both sons and daughters, an X-linked gene tends to travel from a father to his daughter and then from that daughter to her son. This diagonal, zig-zag transmission of a character from a parent to the grand-offspring of the same sex, through offspring of the opposite sex, is called criss-cross inheritance.

Inheritance of an X-linked recessive character in humans - Haemophilia (haemophilia is a disorder in which blood fails to clot; the gene 'h' is recessive and located on the X chromosome):

Genotypes:

  • Normal female: X^H X^H ; Carrier female: X^H X^h (normal but carries the gene); Haemophilic female: X^h X^h (very rare).
  • Normal male: X^H Y ; Haemophilic male: X^h Y.

Cross - a carrier woman married to a normal man:

Parents: Carrier mother X^H X^h x Normal father X^H Y

Gametes from mother: X^H and X^h ; from father: X^H and Y.

Offspring (Punnett square):

  • X^H X^H : normal daughter
  • X^H X^h : carrier daughter (phenotypically normal)
  • X^H Y : normal son
  • X^h Y : haemophilic son

Results:

  • Daughters: all phenotypically normal, but half are carriers.
  • Sons: half are normal and half are haemophilic (1:1). …
