Ethers are named by the IUPAC substitutive method as alkoxyalkanes - the smaller alkyl-O- group becomes the 'alkoxy' substituent prefix on the longer parent chain.

Diethyl ether has the structure CH3-CH2-O-CH2-CH3. In IUPAC nomenclature, an ether R-O-R' is named by treating the smaller of the two R groups (with the oxygen) as an alkoxy substituent on the parent chain formed by the larger R' group: R-O- becomes 'R-oxy'.
