Formic acid is the sting-acid of ants; the Cannizzaro reaction is a base-mediated disproportionation of aldehydes lacking alpha-H; and sodium acetate on soda-lime decarboxylation gives methane.

i) Acid present in red-ant sting: the acid injected by ants (and also present in nettle stings) is methanoic acid (common name formic acid), HCOOH - its IUPAC name is methanoic acid.

ii) Cannizzaro reaction: aldehydes that have NO alpha-hydrogen atom (i.e. cannot undergo aldol condensation) undergo a self oxidation-reduction (disproportionation) reaction when treated with concentrated (strong) alkali. In this reaction, one molecule of the aldehyde is reduced to the corresponding alcohol while a second molecule is oxidised to the carboxylate salt.

Example with formaldehyde (which has no alpha-H):

2 HCHO + NaOH(conc.) -> CH3OH + HCOONa

(one molecule of HCHO is reduced to methanol, the other is oxidised to sodium formate)
