Benzenediazonium chloride reacts with NaNO2/Cu powder to replace the diazonium group with a nitro group, and the resulting nitrobenzene is then reduced by Sn/HCl back to an amine (aniline).

Step 1: C6H5N2+Cl- --Cu powder / aqueous NaNO2--> [A]

In the presence of copper powder as catalyst, aqueous sodium nitrite replaces the diazonium group (-N2+) of benzenediazonium chloride with a nitro group (-NO2), releasing N2 gas. This gives:

[A] = Nitrobenzene, C6H5-NO2

Step 2: [A] --Sn / HCl (6[H], nascent hydrogen)--> [B] …
