Aniline treated with NaNO2/HCl at 273-278 K undergoes diazotisation to give benzenediazonium chloride [A]; this diazonium salt reacts with cuprous chloride (Sandmeyer reaction) to replace the -N2+ group with -Cl, giving chlorobenzene [B].

Step 1 (Diazotisation): Aniline (C6H5NH2) reacts with a cold (273-278 K) mixture of sodium nitrite and hydrochloric acid (which generates nitrous acid, HNO2, in situ). This converts the -NH2 group into a diazonium group, -N2+Cl-:

C6H5NH2 + NaNO2 + 2HCl --(273-278 K)--> C6H5N2+Cl- + NaCl + 2H2O

So [A] = benzenediazonium chloride, C6H5N2+Cl-.
