DNA and RNA differ in sugar, one base, and strandedness; bromine water mildly oxidises glucose's aldehyde group to a carboxylic acid, giving gluconic acid.

(a) Two differences between DNA and RNA:

  1. Sugar component: DNA contains 2-deoxyribose (a pentose sugar lacking an –OH at the 2' position); RNA contains ribose (which has an –OH at the 2' position).
  2. Nitrogenous bases / strand structure: DNA contains the base thymine (T) (along with adenine, guanine, cytosine) and is typically double-stranded, forming a double helix. RNA contains uracil (U) in place of thymine, and is typically single-stranded.

(b) Glucose + bromine water:

Bromine water is a mild oxidising agent. It selectively oxidises the aldehyde group (–CHO) of glucose to a carboxylic acid group (–COOH), without affecting the –OH groups. The product is gluconic acid (a monocarboxylic acid).
