The order of a reaction is an experimentally determined exponent sum in the rate law; a pseudo first order reaction is a reaction whose true order is higher but which behaves as first order because the concentration of one reactant stays effectively constant.

i) Order of reaction: for a reaction whose rate law is rate = k[A]^x [B]^y, the order of the reaction is defined as the sum of the powers (exponents) of the concentration terms, i.e. order = x + y. It is an experimentally determined quantity (not necessarily equal to the stoichiometric coefficients) and can be zero, a fraction, or a whole number.

ii) Pseudo first order reaction: this is a reaction that is intrinsically of a higher order (e.g. second order, depending on two reactants), but which is made to behave as if it were first order because one of the reactants is present in very large excess, so its concentration remains almost constant throughout the reaction and can be absorbed into the rate constant.

Example: acid-catalysed hydrolysis of ethyl acetate in aqueous solution:

CH3COOC2H5 + H2O --(H+)--> CH3COOH + C2H5OH …
