The Ni-Cd cell is a secondary (rechargeable) battery: Cd metal anode, NiO2 cathode, KOH electrolyte, longer service life than the lead storage cell.

A labelled diagram of a nickel-cadmium cell would show, in place of a drawing:

  1. ANODE (negative electrode): a plate/grid of metallic cadmium (Cd).
  2. CATHODE (positive electrode): a metal grid packed with nickel oxide, NiO2 (nickel(IV) oxide/hydroxide).
  3. ELECTROLYTE: an aqueous solution of potassium hydroxide, KOH, filling the sealed casing and contacting both electrodes.
  4. An external circuit/load connects the two electrode terminals at the top of the sealed cell casing.

Electrode reactions during discharge:

Anode (oxidation): Cd(s) + 2OH-(aq) -> Cd(OH)2(s) + 2e-

Cathode (reduction): NiO2(s) + 2H2O(l) + 2e- -> Ni(OH)2(s) + 2OH-(aq) …
