Primary cells:
These are galvanic cells in which the cell reaction occurs only once and cannot be reversed. Once the reactants are used up, the cell 'dies' and cannot be recharged; it has to be thrown away. The electrode reactions are irreversible.
- Example: Dry cell (Leclanché cell) — anode: zinc container; cathode: a carbon (graphite) rod surrounded by MnO2 and carbon; electrolyte: a moist paste of NH4Cl and ZnCl2. Also the mercury cell.
Secondary cells (storage cells / accumulators):
These cells can be recharged after use by passing a direct current through them in the opposite direction, which reverses the cell reaction and regenerates the original reactants. Thus they can be used repeatedly (charge–discharge cycles). …
