Optical isomers are non-superimposable mirror-image molecules (enantiomers) that differ only in how they rotate plane-polarised light.

When a carbon atom in a molecule is attached to four different atoms or groups, it becomes an asymmetric (chiral) centre. Such a molecule can exist in two forms that are non-superimposable mirror images of each other — like a left and a right hand.

These two forms:

  • have identical physical and chemical properties in an achiral environment (same melting point, boiling point, solubility, etc.)
  • differ only in their effect on plane-polarised light: one rotates it clockwise (dextrorotatory, d or +) and the other rotates it anticlockwise by the same angle (laevorotatory, l or −) …
