Optical activity is the rotation of plane-polarised light by certain substances; chirality is the structural non-superimposability on a mirror image that causes this behaviour.

a) Optical activity: when plane-polarised light is passed through certain substances (in the pure liquid state or in solution), the plane of polarisation is rotated through some angle. Such substances are said to be optically active. A substance that rotates the plane clockwise (as seen by the observer) is dextrorotatory (+), and one that rotates it anticlockwise is laevorotatory (-).
