But-2-ene shows cis/trans geometrical isomerism about its C=C bond; ethane shows eclipsed and staggered conformations on rotation about its C–C single bond, seen via Newman projections.

(a) Geometrical isomers of but-2-ene (CH3–CH=CH–CH3):

Restricted rotation about the C=C double bond allows two arrangements of the methyl groups relative to the double bond:

  • cis-but-2-ene: both CH3 groups (and both H atoms) lie on the same side of the double bond. H3C\ /H C=C H/ \CH3 (cis: CH3 groups on the same side)
  • trans-but-2-ene: the two CH3 groups lie on opposite sides of the double bond. H3C\ /H C=C H/ \CH3 arranged diagonally opposite — i.e. one CH3 up-left, the other CH3 down-right (trans: CH3 groups on opposite sides).

(b) Conformers of ethane (Newman projection, viewed along the C–C bond):

Rotation about the C–C single bond of ethane (H3C–CH3) is (nearly) free, generating an infinite number of conformations, of which two extremes are usually drawn: …
