Azeotropes are liquid mixtures whose vapour has exactly the same composition as the liquid, so distillation cannot change their composition or separate the components.

When two liquids show large deviation from Raoult's law (either strong positive or strong negative deviation), at one particular composition the vapour pressure curve passes through an extremum (maximum or minimum). At this composition, the vapour formed on boiling has exactly the same composition as the liquid - the mixture then behaves like a single pure liquid during distillation and boils at a fixed, constant temperature.

Such a constant-boiling mixture of fixed composition that cannot be separated into its pure components by simple fractional distillation is called an azeotropic mixture (azeotrope).
