There is a fundamental limit to how precisely we can simultaneously know both the position and momentum of a microscopic particle — a consequence of matter's wave nature.

Werner Heisenberg's uncertainty principle states that it is fundamentally impossible to determine, simultaneously and with arbitrary precision, both the position and the momentum of a particle (such as an electron). If Δx\Delta x is the uncertainty in position and Δp\Delta p is the uncertainty in momentum, then:

Δx⋅Δp≥h4π\Delta x\cdot\Delta p \ge \dfrac{h}{4\pi}

(sometimes written as Δx⋅Δp≥ℏ/2\Delta x \cdot \Delta p \geq \hbar/2, where ℏ=h/2π\hbar = h/2\pi).
