Gauss's law (flux = q_enclosed/epsilon_0) applied to an infinite charged sheet gives E = sigma/(2 epsilon_0); for the figure, the shaded overlap encloses +2 and -1 microC (net +1 microC), so flux = 1.13 x 10^5 N m^2/C.

Gaussian surface uniformly charged infinite plane sheet

a) Gauss's law and field of an infinite non-conducting charged sheet:

Statement: The total electric flux through any closed (Gaussian) surface equals 1/epsilon_0 times the net charge enclosed:

flux = closed integral of E . dA = q_enclosed/epsilon_0.

Derivation for an infinite plane sheet with uniform surface charge density sigma:

By symmetry the field E is perpendicular to the sheet and points outward on both sides. Choose a Gaussian 'pill-box' (a small cylinder) of cross-sectional area A piercing the sheet, with its two flat faces parallel to the sheet, one on each side.

  • Flux through the curved side = 0 (E is parallel to that surface).
  • Flux through each flat face = E A; two faces give total flux = 2 E A.
  • Charge enclosed = sigma A. Gauss's law: 2 E A = sigma A/epsilon_0 => E = sigma/(2 epsilon_0). …
