A polaroid is a thin sheet that only lets through light waves vibrating along one fixed direction, converting ordinary (unpolarised) light into linearly polarised light.

A polaroid consists of long chain molecules aligned in a particular direction, embedded in a plastic sheet, such that they absorb light whose electric field vibrates parallel to the chains while freely transmitting light vibrating perpendicular to them. So unpolarised light passing through a polaroid emerges as linearly polarised light, vibrating only along the polaroid's transmission axis.
