The Machine Account is never credited with depreciation — it stays at ₹2,00,000. Depreciation (₹10,000 for 6 months, then ₹20,000, ₹20,000) accumulates in the Provision for Depreciation Account: ₹10,000 → ₹30,000 → ₹50,000.

Concept — why keep a separate provision

When a Provision for Depreciation Account is maintained, the asset account is left untouched at its original cost so the balance sheet still shows what the asset cost. Each year, Depreciation A/c is debited and Provision for Depreciation A/c is credited (instead of crediting the asset). The Depreciation A/c is then closed to Profit and Loss. Depreciation for 2016-17 is only for 6 months (Oct 01 to Mar 31): ₹20,000 × 6/12 = ₹10,000.
