Mutually exclusive events cannot occur at the same time — illustrated by Head/Tail on a single coin toss.

Two events A,BA,B defined on sample space SS are mutually exclusive (disjoint) if

A∩B=∅⟺P(A∩B)=0A\cap B=\varnothing \quad\Longleftrightarrow\quad P(A\cap B)=0

i.e., the occurrence of one automatically rules out the occurrence of the other in that same trial.

  1. Set up the experiment. Toss a single fair coin once. Sample space S={H,T}S=\{H,T\}.
  2. Define the events. Let A=A= "coin shows Head" ={H}=\{H\}, and B=B= "coin shows Tail" ={T}=\{T\}.
  3. Check the intersection.

A∩B={H}∩{T}=∅A\cap B=\{H\}\cap\{T\}=\varnothing

A single toss can only ever produce one face — Head or Tail, never both — so AA and BB can never occur simultaneously. …
