Quartiles are located just like the median. For individual and discrete series the positions are given (with N = number of observations) by:
Q1=size of (4N+1)th item,Q3=size of (43(N+1))th item
When the position is not a whole number, interpolate between the two adjacent items.
Example — lower quartile. Marks of ten students: 22, 26, 14, 30, 18, 11, 35, 41, 12, 32. Arranged in ascending order: 11, 12, 14, 18, 22, 26, 30, 32, 35, 41.
Q1=size of (4N+1)th item=(410+1)th=2.75th item
Interpolating between the 2nd and 3rd items:
