Because Unicode assigns a unique code point to every character of every Indian script, any Unicode-compliant font covering that script can be used — e.g. Mangal/Nirmala UI (Hindi), Latha/Noto Sans Tamil (Tamil), Gautami/Noto Sans Telugu (Telugu).

Why Unicode makes this possible. Older 8-bit encodings (like ASCII) had room for only 128/256 symbols, so Indian-language typing needed proprietary, mutually incompatible fonts. Unicode solves this by giving every character of every script in the world its own unique code point — Devanagari occupies U+0900 to U+097F, Tamil U+0B80 to U+0BFF, Telugu U+0C00 to U+0C7F, and so on. A Unicode font simply supplies the glyphs (shapes) for those code points, so any such font can render/type that language and the text remains portable across computers.

You can see the distinct code points from Python:

for ch in "अஅఅ": # the letter "a" in Devanagari, Tamil, Telugu
    print(ch, hex(ord(ch)))
अ 0x905
அ 0xb85
అ 0xc05

Model answer (a worked example of the exploration). Exploring the fonts installed on a Windows PC (Settings → Fonts) and the Google Noto project, two Unicode fonts for each of three Indian languages:

Language (script)Unicode font 1Unicode font 2
Hindi (Devanagari)MangalNirmala UI
Tamil (Tamil)LathaNoto Sans Tamil
Telugu (Telugu)GautamiNoto Sans Telugu
