Keep a running product fact (initialised to 1) and multiply it by every integer from 1 to n in a for loop — for the input 5 the program prints 120.

The idea. The factorial n! = 1 × 2 × 3 × … × n is the multiplicative twin of a running sum: instead of adding into an accumulator that starts at 0, we multiply into an accumulator that starts at 1 (the identity for multiplication). A counting for loop supplies the integers 1…n.

# Program 6-19: calculate the factorial of a given number
num = int(input("Enter a number: "))
fact = 1
if num < 0:
    print("Factorial is not defined for negative numbers")
else:
    for i in range(1, num + 1):
        fact = fact * i
    print("Factorial of", num, "is", fact)

Sample run (user enters 5)

Enter a number: 5
Factorial of 5 is 120

Dry run for num = 5

ifact beforefact = fact * i
111
212
326
4624
524120

Edge cases handled

  • num = 0: range(1, 1) is empty, the loop body never runs, and fact remains 1 — which is exactly the mathematical convention 0! = 1. …
