Terminator → Start/Stop, parallelogram → Data (input/output), rectangle → Process, diamond → Decision, arrow → Flow of control.

The idea (flowchart symbols). A flowchart is the graphical form of an algorithm, and each shape has one fixed, standard meaning — that is what makes flowcharts readable by anyone. Matching shape to function is therefore pure recall of the standard convention.

The matching

#Flowchart symbolFunctionWhy
1Rounded rectangle / stadium (terminator)Start/Stop of the ProcessEvery flowchart begins and ends with exactly this terminator shape.
2ParallelogramDataThe slanted box is the input/output symbol — data entering (INPUT/READ) or leaving (PRINT/DISPLAY) the process.
3RectangleProcess StepA plain box holds a computation or assignment, e.g. total = price * qty.
4DiamondDecision MakingThe diamond asks a yes/no question; control leaves along the Yes or No arrow — the flowchart form of a conditional.
5ArrowFlow of ControlArrows connect the symbols and show the order in which the steps execute.
