Training load and overload supply the stimulus, recovery allows the body to repair, and adaptation raises performance; repeated as a cycle this lifts an athlete's level, but neglecting recovery breaks the cycle and causes over-training.

The four elements:

  • Training load — the total stress placed on the body by exercise (intensity, volume, density, duration).
  • Over-load — raising that load beyond the body's current capacity so it is forced to respond.
  • Adaptation — the lasting improvement the body makes in response, becoming stronger and more efficient.
  • Recovery — the rest and restoration during which the body repairs itself and adaptation actually takes place.

How they work together as a cycle: A suitable training load is applied and then raised as an over-load, which stresses the body and causes temporary fatigue. During recovery, the body repairs the stressed tissues and rebuilds them slightly stronger — this is when adaptation occurs. The athlete now has a higher capacity, so the load can be raised again, and the cycle repeats: load → over-load → recovery → adaptation → higher load. Repeated correctly over time, this progressive cycle steadily raises the athlete's performance. …
