Q.A solution of 8% boric acid is to be diluted by adding a 2% boric acid solution to it. The resulting mixture is to be more than 4% but less than 6% boric acid. If we have 640 litres of the 8% solution, how many litres of the 2% solution will have to be added?

We treat this as a mixture concentration problem: adding xx litres of 2% solution to 640 litres of 8% solution gives a final concentration between 4% and 6%. Solving the two inequalities yields 320<x<1280320 < x < 1280 litres.

Why mixture concentration works

When you combine two solutions of different strengths, the final concentration is a weighted average of the two — weighted by the volumes. If you add a weaker solution to a stronger one, the result lies somewhere in between. The exact position depends on how much of each you mix. This is the core idea: the total amount of boric acid divided by the total volume gives the new percentage.

Let the volume of 2% solution added be xx litres.

  1. Total boric acid after mixing

    The 8% solution contributes 0.08×640=51.20.08 \times 640 = 51.2 litres of pure boric acid.

    The 2% solution contributes 0.02×x0.02 \times x litres.

    So total boric acid = 51.2+0.02x51.2 + 0.02x litres.

  2. Total volume after mixing

    640+x640 + x litres.

  3. Final concentration

51.2+0.02x640+x\frac{51.2 + 0.02x}{640 + x}

This must lie strictly between 4% and 6%, i.e. between 0.040.04 and 0.060.06.

  1. Set up the double inequality

0.04<51.2+0.02x640+x<0.060.04 < \frac{51.2 + 0.02x}{640 + x} < 0.06

  1. Solve the left inequality (mixture > 4%)

51.2+0.02x640+x>0.04\frac{51.2 + 0.02x}{640 + x} > 0.04

Multiply both sides by (640+x)(640 + x) — which is positive, so inequality direction stays:

51.2+0.02x>0.04(640+x)51.2 + 0.02x > 0.04(640 + x)

51.2+0.02x>25.6+0.04x51.2 + 0.02x > 25.6 + 0.04x

51.2−25.6>0.04x−0.02x51.2 - 25.6 > 0.04x - 0.02x

25.6>0.02x25.6 > 0.02x

x<1280x < 1280

  1. Solve the right inequality (mixture < 6%)

51.2+0.02x640+x<0.06\frac{51.2 + 0.02x}{640 + x} < 0.06

51.2+0.02x<0.06(640+x)51.2 + 0.02x < 0.06(640 + x)

51.2+0.02x<38.4+0.06x51.2 + 0.02x < 38.4 + 0.06x
