Break each partner's year into the periods between changes in their capital balance, compute interest for each period at 8% p.a., and add. Saloni's total is ₹17,800; Srishti's is ₹27,300.

Concept

When capital changes during the year (an addition, a withdrawal, or both), interest is calculated on the opening balance for the whole year up to the first change, then on each new balance for the period it actually stood, right through to the year-end.

Solution — Saloni

PeriodCapital (₹)MonthsInterest (₹)
Apr 1 – Jun 302,00,00032,00,000 × 8% × 3/12 = 4,000
Jul 1 – Sep 30 (after +₹50,000)2,50,00032,50,000 × 8% × 3/12 = 5,000
Oct 1 – Mar 31 (after −₹30,000)2,20,00062,20,000 × 8% × 6/12 = 8,800
Total17,800

Solution — Srishti

PeriodCapital (₹)MonthsInterest (₹)
Apr 1 – Jun 303,00,00033,00,000 × 8% × 3/12 = 6,000
Jul 1 – Dec 31 (after +₹60,000)3,60,00063,60,000 × 8% × 6/12 = 14,400
Jan 1 – Mar 31 (after −₹15,000)3,45,00033,45,000 × 8% × 3/12 = 6,900
Total27,300
Note

The NCERT textbook misprints Srishti's final line: it shows the interest on ₹3,45,000 for 3 months (Jan–Mar) as "₹300" and omits Srishti's total. The correct figure is ₹3,45,000 × 8% × 3/12 = ₹6,900, giving a total of ₹27,300 — that is what is shown above. (Saloni's total of ₹17,800 matches the book exactly.)

✓Final answer

Interest on capital for 2019-20: Saloni ₹17,800, Srishti ₹27,300.
