The Loss on Issue of Debentures A/c (₹40,000, being the ₹20,000 discount plus the ₹20,000 redemption premium) is a separate, one-time item recorded only at issue — it is never mixed with the recurring interest entries.
Concept
Debenture interest is a charge against profit, payable whether or not the company has earned a profit, and is always computed on the nominal (face) value regardless of the issue price. Under the Income Tax Act, 1961, the company deducts TDS from the interest at the time it becomes due (not at payment) and remits it separately to the government; the debentureholder receives only the net amount and later adjusts the TDS against their own tax liability.
Working Note
- Face value of debentures = 2,000 × ₹100 = ₹2,00,000
- Issue price (10% discount) = ₹2,00,000 – ₹20,000 = ₹1,80,000
- Premium on redemption (10%) = 10% of ₹2,00,000 = ₹20,000
- Loss on Issue of Debentures = discount ₹20,000 + redemption premium ₹20,000 = ₹40,000
- Annual interest = 10% of ₹2,00,000 = ₹20,000; half-yearly interest = ₹10,000
- TDS per half-year = 10% of ₹10,000 = ₹1,000; net payable to debentureholders per half-year = ₹9,000
