A projectile's trajectory is shaped by six interacting factors — gravity, air resistance, and how fast, at what angle, from what height, and with what spin the object is released.

Section 8.5.1 lists six factors:

  1. Gravity: the earth's pull toward its centre, proportional to mass — without it the object would travel in a straight line.
  2. Air resistance: brought into play by the object's surface area, its speed, how rough its surface is, and its mass.
  3. Speed of release: determined by muscle force — generally, the greater the release speed, the greater the distance (e.g., javelin, discus).
  4. Angle of release: varies by activity — basketball shooting needs an angle above 45°, while tennis needs a much shallower 3-15° angle.
