All three are IOC-linked disability-sport movements, but they differ in who they serve, how they group athletes for fairness, and how they relate to the Olympic Games.

Paralympics: organised by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC, founded 1989) for athletes across ten eligible-impairment categories (physical, visual, intellectual). Athletes are grouped through classification — categorising by disability type so winning is decided by skill, not degree of impairment. Since the 1988 Seoul Games, Paralympics are held in the same cities/venues immediately following the Olympics.

Special Olympics: for children and adults with intellectual and physical disabilities, founded by Eunice Kennedy Shriver (1962 Camp Shriver), providing year-round training to 5 million athletes in 172 countries. Athletes are grouped through divisioning — matching by gender, age and competitive ability so every athlete (not just the best) is recognised.
