Meaning of Final Accounts

Final Accounts are the set of accounting statements prepared at the END of an accounting period, using the balances carried forward in the Trial Balance, to show:

  1. The profit or loss made during the period, and
  2. The financial position (assets and liabilities) of the business as on the closing date.

For a sole trader engaged in buying and selling goods, Final Accounts consist of TWO parts:

  • Trading and Profit and Loss Account — an income statement covering the accounting PERIOD (e.g. "for the year ended 31st March 2024"), showing how the year's Gross Profit and Net Profit were arrived at.
  • Balance Sheet — a position statement AS ON a particular DATE (e.g. "as at 31st March 2024"), listing everything the business owns (assets) and owes (liabilities), together with the owner's capital.
