Q.Define the terms: Assessee, Previous Year, and Assessment Year.
Assessee [Section 2(7)]: a person by whom income tax (or any other sum) is payable under the Act, including a person whose income, or another person's income for which they are liable, or a loss/refund due to them, is under assessment.
Previous Year [Section 3]: the financial year (1st April to 31st March) immediately preceding the assessment year — the year in which income is actually earned.
Assessment Year [Section 2(9)]: the financial year (1st April to 31st March) immediately following the previous year, in which the previous year's income is assessed and taxed.
Example: income earned between 1st April 2025 and 31st March 2026 is the 'previous year' 2025-26; that income is assessed and taxed in the 'assessment year' 2026-27 (1st April 2026 to 31st March 2027).
Assessee: a person liable to pay tax or under assessment for income/loss/refund. Previous Year: the year in which income is earned. Assessment Year: the year immediately following, in which that income is assessed and taxed.
