Q.Explain Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) and Knowledge Process Outsourcing (KPO), and discuss why India became a global hub for these services.
Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) is the contracting out of a specific business process to an external service provider rather than performing it in-house. It is commonly divided into voice-based BPO — inbound/outbound call centres handling customer support, telemarketing or technical helpdesks — and non-voice/back-office BPO, such as data entry, payroll processing and document management.
Knowledge Process Outsourcing (KPO) goes a step further, involving the outsourcing of processes that demand specialised domain knowledge, analytical ability and professional judgment rather than routine execution. Typical KPO work includes equity and financial research, legal process outsourcing, patent research, engineering and design services, and medical transcription combined with clinical analytics. Because it requires trained professionals exercising judgment, KPO commands higher value per employee than routine BPO work.
India became a leading global destination for both BPO and KPO for several reasons working together: (i) a large pool of English-speaking, technically educated graduates and postgraduates available at wages well below comparable developed-country salaries — a genuine cost arbitrage; (ii) government policy support through bodies such as Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) and Special Economic Zone (SEZ) incentives; (iii) steadily improving telecommunication and internet infrastructure since the 1990s; and (iv) a time-zone position relative to Europe and North America that allows round-the-clock, "follow-the-sun" service delivery. Cities such as Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Gurugram and Pune grew into major BPO/KPO hubs as a result, and the sector today employs millions of people while contributing significantly to India's services exports.
BPO outsources defined, routine processes (voice or non-voice); KPO outsources judgment-intensive, knowledge-based processes. India became a global hub due to its cost-competitive English-speaking skilled workforce, favourable government policy/infrastructure, and time-zone advantage.
