SGST (State Goods and Services Tax) is the State Government's component of GST, charged along with CGST on supplies made within a state.

GST is a single, comprehensive indirect tax on the supply of goods and services, covered in the indirect taxation chapter of the TN HSC Class-11 Commerce syllabus. Because India is a federal country, GST on a transaction is shared between the Centre and the States, and this is why GST has more than one component.

SGST — State Goods and Services Tax:

  • It is levied and collected by the State Government on the intra-state supply of goods and services (that is, when the buyer and seller are in the same state).
  • On such a sale, tax is split into two equal parts — CGST (collected by the Central Government) and SGST (collected by the State Government). For example, if GST is 18%, it is charged as 9% CGST + 9% SGST. …
