Foreign Direct Investment and Foreign Portfolio Investment

Once a business looks beyond financing a single trade transaction and starts raising longer-term capital across borders, two of the most important routes it can use -- or that a foreign investor can use to put money into it -- are Foreign Direct Investment and Foreign Portfolio Investment. Although both involve money flowing in from abroad, the two are fundamentally different in intent, permanence, and the degree of control they carry.

Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) refers to an investment made by an individual, company, or entity from one country to acquire a lasting management interest -- typically a controlling or influential ownership stake -- in a business located in another country. FDI is not simply about earning a financial return; it is about actively participating in, and often controlling, the management and strategic direction of the business being invested in. It commonly takes the form of setting up a new wholly owned subsidiary abroad, entering into a joint venture with a local partner, or acquiring a significant or controlling shareholding in an existing foreign company. Because FDI usually involves setting up real operations, transferring technology and management expertise, and making a long-term commitment, it is generally regarded as a more stable and durable form of international investment, one that is not easily withdrawn overnight. …
