Udyam Registration of MSMEs
Udyam Registration of MSMEs
Every enterprise that wishes to be formally recognised as a Micro, Small or Medium Enterprise, and to access the benefits and support schemes meant for this sector, must register itself through Udyam Registration. Udyam Registration is a simple, entirely online, self-declaration-based registration process introduced by the Government of India with effect from 1 July 2020. It replaced the earlier registration mechanism known as the Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum (UAM), which itself had replaced an even older, more paperwork-heavy system of filing physical Entrepreneurs Memorandum forms with state-level authorities.
Under Udyam Registration, an entrepreneur or business owner fills in basic details of the enterprise — such as Aadhaar-linked identity details, PAN, and information on investment and turnover — on the official Udyam Registration portal. Because the process is based on self-declaration, no supporting documents, certificates, or proof need to be uploaded at the time of registration itself; the details are subsequently cross-verified using data already available with government departments such as the Income Tax and GST systems. This design was intended to make registration fast, paperless, and free of cost, removing the delays and compliance burden that had earlier discouraged many small businesses from registering at all.
Once the registration process is completed, the enterprise receives an Udyam Registration Certificate, along with a unique Udyam Registration Number. This certificate serves as the enterprise's official proof of its MSME status and its classification — micro, small, or medium — as determined by the investment and turnover figures declared. It is a permanent registration, valid for the lifetime of the enterprise, though the enterprise is expected to update its investment and turnover figures periodically so that its classification remains accurate as the business grows. …
