Classification of Banks — An Overview
Banks operating in India can be classified on the basis of ownership, function, and area of operation into the following broad categories:

| Central Bank | Reserve Bank of India (apex bank, regulator — covered in the previous chapter) |
| Commercial Banks | Public Sector Banks, Private Sector Banks, Foreign Banks |
| Cooperative Banks | Primary Agricultural Credit Societies, District Central Cooperative Banks, State Cooperative Banks |
| Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) | Sponsored by a commercial bank, jointly owned by Central Government, State Government and the sponsor bank |
| Development Banks | IDBI, SIDBI, NABARD, EXIM Bank |
| Specialised/New-Age Banks | Payments Banks, Small Finance Banks |
