Types of Warehouses
Warehouses in India can be classified on the basis of ownership and the kind of goods they are meant to store:
1. Private Warehouses. Owned and operated by individual manufacturers or trading firms solely to store their own goods, giving the owner complete control over storage conditions and access, but requiring the owner's own capital investment.
2. Public Warehouses. Owned and operated by an individual or firm as a business in itself, offering storage facilities to any member of the public (traders, manufacturers, farmers) for a rental fee. These are licensed and regulated by the Government to ensure standards of safe custody are maintained, and are widely used by smaller traders who cannot afford to build their own warehouse.
3. Bonded Warehouses. Licensed by customs authorities to store imported goods on which import duty has not yet been paid. The importer can keep goods in a bonded warehouse (under customs lock/supervision) and pay the customs duty only when the goods are actually taken out for sale/use in the domestic market — useful when an importer wants to defer duty payment, or plans to re-export the goods without ever paying domestic duty at all.
4. Cooperative Warehouses. Owned and run by a cooperative society, mainly for the benefit of its farmer-members, offering storage of agricultural produce at concessional rates.
5. Government Warehouses. Owned and operated by the Government (Central/State) or a statutory body, such as the Food Corporation of India (FCI), Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC) and State Warehousing Corporations, mainly to store foodgrains and other essential commodities as part of the Government's food-security and price-support operations.
