The reasons for an upward-sloping (positively sloped) supply curve are:
- Profit motive / direct price effect — as price rises, producing and selling each unit becomes more profitable, so firms willingly offer a larger quantity for sale; at lower prices they offer less.
- Rising marginal cost (law of diminishing returns) — as a firm expands output in the short run, marginal cost tends to rise. Producers will supply the extra output only if the higher price covers this higher cost, so more is supplied only at higher prices.
