The rings, motto, creed and flag are the Olympic Movement's core symbols, and each one expresses a specific ideal — unity, aspiration, and the primacy of effort over victory.

The Olympic Symbol — five interlocked rings of equal size, coloured blue, yellow, black, green and red — represents the union of the five continents (the Americas, Africa, Asia, Australia and Europe), symbolising the unity of sportspersons from every part of the world competing together.

The Olympic Flag, created by Coubertin in 1913 and first flown in 1920, carries this symbol on a plain white background. Coubertin himself explained that the flag's six colours (including white) appear on every national flag in the world, so every competing nation can see something of its own identity in it.

The Olympic Motto, "Citius – Altius – Fortius" (Faster, Higher, Stronger), expresses the Movement's aspiration toward sporting excellence — proposed by Coubertin in 1894 and first announced in 1924. …
