A skinfold caliper directly reads the thickness of a pinched skin-plus-fat fold, which is used to estimate a person's body fat percentage.

Section 6.5.3 (printed as 7.5.3) explains that "a skinfold is constituted by a double layer of skin plus underlying fatty tissue (subcutaneous fat)" - measured by lifting the fold with the thumb, forefinger and middle finger and applying the calliper's jaws about half a centimetre below the picked fold. Because fatty tissue is compressible, the reading is taken under a standard calliper pressure of 10 gm/mm² and read about two seconds after releasing full pressure, using a reliable calliper such as Harpenden, Lange or Lafayette. This fits the earlier list, in section 6.5.1, of accepted body-fat-measurement methods - "hydrostatic weighing, skinfolds, girths, [BIA], [DXA]" - which the chapter uses to "place body fat level on a continuum."
