In 1833, the German botanist Matthias Schleiden and the German zoologist Theodor Schwann independently studied plant and animal tissue and arrived at the same striking conclusion: every plant and every animal, however different they looked, was built from the same basic kind of unit - the cell. Bringing their two separate lines of evidence together, they proposed that all plants and animals are composed of cells, and that the cell is the fundamental building block from which every living structure is assembled.
