Step 2. In its oxidative phase, six molecules of glucose-6-phosphate are oxidised and decarboxylated by glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and associated enzymes, releasing 6 CO2 and generating 12 while converting the sugars into six molecules of the five-carbon ribulose-5-phosphate.
Step 3. In the non-oxidative phase, these ribulose-5-phosphate molecules are rearranged through a series of sugar-interconversion reactions into various intermediates (ribose-5-phosphate, xylulose-5-phosphate, glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate, sedoheptulose-7-phosphate and erythrose-4-phosphate), which are finally reassembled into five molecules of glucose-6-phosphate, regenerating the starting material. …
